Mission Projects

Missions Programs and Outreach

The Missions Team at Linden Heights UMC invites you to get involved in many and varied outreach activities and programs.

Many or our projects require volunteers for hands-on work and we welcome your participation.

If you would like to make a monetary contribution to any of our mission projects you can use your weekly envelopes or the envelopes provided in the church pews. Please mark your envelope for missions or a specific program in missions.

Food Box

A food box is being placed near the entrance to the church where non-perishable food can be placed for distribution to various food pantries and soup kitchens. The first collection will go to the Parkville Carney Assistance network (PCAN). Donated food to PCAN goes to help people directly in our neighborhood. There has been a dramatic increase in food needed to feed the hungry. It is an ongoing concern, especially in this poor economy.

Baltimore County Christian Workcamp

The Baltimore County Christian Workcamp improves homes and provides assistance for limited income families in Baltimore County. This year the camp runs from July 10-24th. Last year 33 out of 46 projects were completed. Work included building ramps, repairing/replacing floors, ceilings, kitchen cabinets, tubs, sinks, faucets, handicap bathrooms, air conditioners, stoves, refrigerators, washers, dryers, railings, doors, weather stripping, insulation, caulking, yard work, cleaning, plumbing, and electrical repairs.

Last year over 200 people participated either in preparation of meals, support services, or directly at the job site. The range of ages were from 10 years old to over 80.

Anyone 16 years or older can register. Persons under 16 can register with an adult participating for every 4-5 youth. The registration deadline is July 1st.

Registration forms are on the bulletin board in back of the church. Please call Jim Hedgespeth at 410-493-7569 if you are interested in participating this year.

Manna House

Manna House is located at 425 E 25th Street in Baltimore City. Their mission is to offer assistance and support to the homeless, poor, and needy of Baltimore with services contributing toward their independence and stability. Each year, our church makes about four home cooked breakfasts for Manna House. Donations are needed to purchase food for approximately 200 clients at a cost of about $2.00 per person. Contact: Gail Dishcher.

Deaf-Blind Camperships

Each year our church sponsors deaf and blind youth and adults who wish to have a camping experience. The camp is held at West River UMC Camp in Annapolis, Maryland. The camp will take place at the end of July. The cost for one week is about $300 per camper and funds are always needed to sponsor those who wish to go.

Summer Mission Trips

Every two years, our church chooses a one week mission project in which to participate. In the past, our members have traveled to Kentucky to help restore houses with Henderson Settlement.

World Vision Child

Our adopted World Vision Child is Alvaro A. Hernandez Vasquez from Guatemala. Volunteers are needed to write letters to our child. The cost of sponsoring our World Vision Child is $312.00 per year.

Homestead UMC Community Service
Children's Breakfast and
Thanksgiving Dinner Baskets

Our sister church in Baltimore City is Homestead UMC. Each year, we donate food and supplies for a weekly children's breakfast. In November the soup kitchen at Homestead provides Thanksgiving dinner and baskets of food to homebound families. Money is needed to purchase supplies for both of these projects and volunteers are needed to deliver the baskets. Contacts: Sandi Ketner and Gail Dishcher.

Chesapeake Habitat for Humanity

There are plans to work a day for the Chesapeake Habitat for Humanity in Harford County. Details to follow.

Operation Christmas

This project which is sponsored by our Sunday School brings joy and hope to children in desperate situations around the world. Shoe boxes are filled with gifts and the good news of God's love. Donations of small toys, school supplies, hygiene items, hard candies, T-shirts, stuffed animals, calculators, coloring books, crayons, markers, and other fun, new items that will fit in a shoe box are needed. Volunteers are also needed to pack and send the boxes. Financial contributions are needed so that the boxes can be sent to needy children. Contact Ruth Snyder.
